The Surprising Health Benefits of Group Classes
BY JODI DIEKER
Exercising… is hard. My mom has been trying to get me to do it for years, it was only in the last two that I started. I know, not a great selling point, but stick with me here. It is awkward and tricky trying to do it on your own, plus, you never really know if you are actually doing it right. Which is why it was not until group mat classes that started enjoying it. Group classes are a great introduction to Pilates. They not only enable someone to learn to exercise correctly, they also have many other surprising benefits!
1. Increases longevity
According to a Mayo Clinic Proceedings 2018 study, researchers found that those who participated in social, group sports or group physical activities live almost ten years longer than those who do not exercise. Compared to those who solo run, individuals were expected to live roughly two years longer.
2. Improves mental health
A 2017 study found that those who participated in a weekly group class were less stressed compared to those who exercised alone! They found that the group class participants had increased physical, emotional, and mental benefits as well.
3. Builds a sense of community
While it may be slightly awkward at first, group classes are a wonderful way to build a sense of community. Everyone knows they are struggling and working hard together. Together we are able to motivate and push each other forward. Besides the pros of having classmates, having an instructor is a tremendous benefit. By giving personal and intentional care, instructors are able to help you through difficult exercises and make sure you are performing them correctly.
Exercising can be tricky, but you don’t have to do it alone!
With so many benefits, why not give group mat classes a shot?
