The Psychology of Luck

February’s Mind Spotlight

BY JODI DIEKER

Can somebody really be lucky? Science can’t fully figure that one out because science is the systematic study of the observable world. However, it can measure and record the tendencies of those who think themselves to be lucky. Richard Wiseman, a psychologist, observed people who believed themselves “to have luck”. Based on his research, here are a few simple steps one can mentally take to have a “lucky” mindset.

1. Be grateful!

Notice the good in your life and little things that make you smile. What are the chances that you were able to have that in your life? A great practice is to keep a gratitude journal and at the end of the day write down what you are grateful for!

2. Keep a positive mindset

When you look at the world, don’t only notice the bad. Keep your eyes open and find the good. This also goes for when one is looking at their future. Don’t assume the worst, hope for the best and focus on that instead. If one is only focused on the negatives, they may be more likely to miss wonderful opportunities.

3. Proactivity

Planning ahead and being productive sets your future up for success! One interesting thing Wiseman notes is that taking steps to say hello to those you do not know, or getting outside of your comfort zone, puts you in new opportunities for achievement.

While lucky rocket ship underwear is all well and good, let’s remember to be grateful, proactive, and keep a positive mindset. Working on forming these habits this month is bound to set us up for success!
