Stress Awareness Month

April’s Heart Spotlight

BY JODI DIEKER

April is National Stress Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how stress impacts our lives. Most of us are familiar with stress, but it’s important to recognize how it affects not only our mental health but also our physical health, especially our hearts. Our mental and heart health are deeply interconnected. Chronic stress can increase the risk of heart disease or strokes, so finding healthy ways to cope is essential for overall well-being.

One great outlet for stress is exercise. Pilates, in particular, is an excellent way to reduce stress while building strength and flexibility. Its focus on controlled movements and deep breathing helps calm the mind and release tension from the body. Pilates provides a perfect balance of relaxation and physical benefits, making it an ideal way to manage stress.

Exercise also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals. These endorphins help improve mood and counteract stress and anxiety. When exercised in a group, we also build a sense of community and support. Group exercise creates an environment where we can connect with others, share experiences, and motivate one another, making stress management even more effective.

Whether through Pilates, cardio, or walking, finding an activity you enjoy is key to managing stress. The goal is to prioritize self-care and regularly release the tension that builds up. This month, let's commit to healthier ways of coping with stress so that we can protect both our minds and our bodies.
